Growing Up-Secret Talent
It was around the same time that Joe's family discovered something they didn't know about young Joe - that he could sing. One day the family were over at Joe's aunt's house, and the kids were playing one her karaoke machine. 'Joe had always refused to go on it, he was too shy,' remembers his mum. 'Then one day he grabbed the mic and sang 'Mr Bojangles' with his cousin - we were blown away!'

-Grease Lightning
Joe's nan convinced him to try out for his school's (Harton Technology College) production of Grease, in the hopes that he would get a supporting role in the stage musical. He ended up winning the lead role of Danny Zuko, and his supportive family spent hours taking o the different roles in Grease alongside him so he could rehearse.
Their efforts paid off - as well as wowing the local Grease audience, Joe went on to appear in plays at his local theatre, The Custon House, and to win the Pride of South Tyneside Young Performer Of The Year in 2008. The shy boy who had never sung in front of his family gained confidence, too, deciding, at the age of 16, to try out for a certain TV talent show by the name of The X Factor.

-Mum Knows Best!
'I knew he was too young (when he first tried out),' says his mum Eileen, 'but he was determined, Then the day before he was due to perform on boot camp, he called and said he wasn't ready so I went to pick him up.'
